WHY SHOULD YOU WEAR SWIMMING EARPLUGS?

POURQUOI UTILISER DES BOUCHONS D’OREILLE À LA PISCINE?

Are you addicted to swimming? Do you feel in your element underwater? If you still want to enjoy the pleasure of swimming, it is highly recommended that you take several precautions, such as wearing swimming earplugs.

All human beings are not created equals!

Some people need to take precautions to prevent water from entering into their ears if they want to avoid ear infections. Other people can enjoy swimming without having to consider protecting their ears. However, for those people who suffer from a perforated eardrum, it seems indispensable to wear swimming earplugs. But how can we explain these differences?

Our external auditory canals can take different forms. While some people have narrowed external auditory canals, others can have a wide ear canal that allows water to enter into the ears.

Nonetheless, it has to be emphasized that every swimmer can contract the so-called “swimmer’s ear”, also called outer ear infection.

HAVE YOU ALREADY HEARD ABOUT THE “SWIMMER’S EAR”?

An outer ear infection is usually caused by an ear infection that can occur after any act of bathing. Thus, an amount of water will remain inside the external auditory canal leading to dampness and thus to a natural proliferation of bacterium and fungus. Bathing is however not the only reason for contracting the swimmer’s ear.

An outer ear infection can also be caused by an ear canal irritation that can result from an excessive use of cotton buds. The latter triggers a built-up of both dead skin cells and earwax within the ears. Yet, the earwax found within our external ears act as a barrier against dampness and infection.

WHY SHOULD YOU WEAR SWIMMING EARPLUGS?

The swimmer’s ear is rarely serious. However, it is important to protect oneself from several inconveniences!

Here are the benefits of wearing swimming earplugs:

They prevents water from entering into the auditory canal;

They prevent earaches;

They protect from both ear infections and irritations;

They enable people to enjoy swimming even if they suffer from a perforated eardrum.

However, several precautions need to be taken when wearing swimming earplugs, such as avoid putting your head deeply underwater.

As stated by Jacques-Yves Cousteau, the deeper we go underwater, the greater the pressure of the water on the eardrum. As a result, people risk damaging their eardrum starting at a depth of one meter. You have been warned!
